Back to Basics: Self talk

There's no easy way to tell you this, but you've been programmed.

Since the day you were born the people in your life have been talking to you about the world and about your place in it.

Overtime, those words and ideas have an influence over our attitudes about our Self and the world around us, and eventually influence how we behave.

Psychologists call this process Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). A very simple concept with massive implications.

You have been programmed to act a certain way based on what you think about the world around.

Most simply stated: the language we hear/use is the bridge between what we think about the world and how we behave towards it.

If you took some time to write down a few of your core beliefs about the areas of your life and the world, do you think they would sound inherently negative? Are you a glass half full or glass half empty kind of thinker? It may seem silly, but a negative mindset is automatically limiting. And you've been programmed one way or the other.

I think what we forget sometimes is that everything exists in harmony with its opposite. Every negative feeling is automatically presented with a positive one that reflects is contrast. You are programmed to focus either on the negative experiences or the positive experiences--but I promise you they exist simultaneously. This is one of those "hindsight is 20:20" kind of things. So often we can only see what beauty is lost while we were focusing on things outside of our control.

One of the most powerful ways you begin to examine your mental terrain is to observe your thoughts, without judging your Self. The only way to truly do this is to quiet the mind through meditation, or meditative actions. Meditation is simply quieting the input from the outside and amplifying the output from the inside. Where do your thoughts lead? Do they inherently turn to worry and critique or are they empowering and supportive? Does your current belief system support the life you dream of living? Abraham Hicks always says "You can't get there from here." You can't get where you want to be by staying stuck in the same place you are now.

Take your NLP back to basics and get that shit right.
